Community Spotlight: Notable Achievements
Leeds honours Caribbean RAF Veterans with Garden of Remembrance: More than 150 people gathered in Leeds for a landmark moment in the city’s history – the unveiling of a memorial garden and commemorative plaque honouring the Caribbean men who left their island homes to serve in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War.
Award winning Brighton bookshop successful campaign to sell 1,000 books: Afrori Books, an independent bookshop specialising in books by Black authors, was aiming to sell 1,000 books before the end of April to secure its future. They successfully sold over 1,500 books, officially securing the shop’s immediate future.
MBCC Awards Nominations: TFG has been nominated in two categories: Most Inspirational Author of The Year and Community Unsung Hero. The awards ceremony takes place on Saturday, 28th November 2026. Public voting is open from 17th June to 1st July.
News from Abroad
Jamaica rises up for Hurricane Melissa: £14,000 was raised at a recent event to raise much-needed funds for the victims of Jamaica’s Hurricane Melissa. The hurricane hit the country last October, claiming many lives and causing widespread and severe damage.
Mozambique clears its debt with the International Monetary Fund: Mozambique has fully repaid its debt to the International Monetary Fund, clearing more than 630 million dollars ahead of schedule. The early repayment could strengthen the government’s position as it looks to secure new financial support.
Cape Verde’s tourism sector reached a new milestone in 2025, welcoming over 1.2 million guests as the archipelago continues to solidify its reputation as a premier Atlantic destination. According to the National Statistics Institute, the number of visitors grew by 6%.

Youth Corner
The Afro-Latin Caribbean Youth Congress is officially underway in Panamá. Young changemakers of African descent across Latin America and the Caribbean are coming together to shape conversations on racial equality, social inclusion and sustainable development.
The African Youth Panel Training – Insights from the young leaders: Young people from across Uganda are sharing how the African Youth Panellists Initiative has helped them better understand themselves, their communities, and the challenges affecting their generation. Through reflection, dialogue, and peer learning, participants are gaining new perspectives on leadership, civic engagement, and their role in driving positive change.
Heritage and History
This month we highlight Caribbean American Heritage Month to celebrate the culture and migration of the Caribbean diaspora.
June 1 (Madaraka Day): An annual public holiday in Kenya commemorating the day in 1963 that the nation attained internal self-rule from British colonial administration.
June 19 (Juneteenth): The most prominent African American holiday, celebrating the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, were finally informed of their emancipation, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
June 22 (Windrush Day): Celebrates the 1948 arrival of the HMT Empire Windrush at Tilbury Docks in the UK, launching the post-war era of a multicultural Britain.
