Welcome to the April 2026 edition of The Forgotten Generations CIC Monthly Newsletter. Our mission is to highlight the stories, achievements, and events of African and Caribbean communities here in the UK and across the world. Thank you for joining us as we celebrate heritage, culture, and community progress.

Community Spotlight: Notable Achievements

  • Black Heritage Awards: Beya Jiménez, an Afro-Caribbean community-building strategist with a focus on social impact, is recognised by her colleagues at the John D. O’Bryant African American Institute for an award celebrating Black achievement.
  • Olivia Dean at the MOBO music awards in Manchester: Congratulations to Olivia for taking home three MOBO awards, for her soulful second album.
  • Lest We Forget exhibition book: On 28 March, it was launched at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre, hosted by Tonia Daley-Campbell. Commissioned by Donald Campbell (The Forgotten Generations CIC), the project brings to life powerful visual stories honouring Black RAF veterans whose voices have often been overlooked. Featuring veterans like 100-year-old Prince Albert ‘Jake’ Jacob, the exhibition has grown from a Birmingham showcase into a touring experience including a book and visual displays. Now at RAF Cosford Museum, it continues to reach new audiences and preserve an important legacy. Supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the project ensures these stories are remembered for generations. ITV Central covered the launch in the evening news. News from Abroad

  • Chicago Public Schools forges ahead with a plan to support black students: The district received a $250,000 pilot grant to fund several initiatives under the Black Student Success umbrella.
  • Malika Jean-François builds bridges between Africa and the Caribbean. Through her own platform, La Caraïbe Investit, and magazine, Investir Caraïbe Afrique Monde, she transforms cultural visibility into economic opportunities, showcasing the talents and projects of both continents.

20/04/2026 Black Health Inequalities Summit London (in person and online) An annual summit addressing systemic health inequalities affecting Black communities in the UK. The event attracts healthcare professionals, policymakers, NHS executives, community organisations, and academic researchers.
22/04/2026 National Stephen Lawrence Day London and Birmingham Stephen Lawrence Day is more than remembrance, it’s a day to celebrate progress, challenge injustice, and empower young people to imagine their futures. They provide schools, workplaces, and individuals with resources and inspiration to participate meaningfully.

Heritage and History

This month we commemorate the toppled Colston Statue, which can be found in a permanent exhibition at M Shed Museum in Bristol. The statue of slave trader Edward Colston was pulled down during a Black Lives Matter march in 2020. The new display focuses on the protest in which the statue was toppled. It features first-hand accounts from protestors and shares the perspectives of those opposed to the toppling. It contextualises the statue into the wider picture of protest against racial injustice over the last 400 years, both in Bristol and around the world.

Youth Corner

  • The Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation leads activities in April focused on young people from underrepresented backgrounds, including workshops in schools across London and Birmingham about leadership, social justice, and career pathways.
  • The Amos Bursary ensures talented young people of African and Caribbean descent have the opportunity to excel in education and beyond. It supports young Black students in accessing top universities and careers through leadership coaching and professional development sessions. It continues its mentoring cycle in April.
