Montserrat is known for its extremely volcanic landscape, and many eruptions and related natural disasters occurred there in the 1990s and 2000s.
Montserrat is an internally self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Because of the economic and social instability resulting from volcanic eruptions in the 1990s and 2000s, Montserrat’s political parties and leadership have changed rapidly.
The population is largely of African ancestry (black), with small numbers of people of European (white) and of mixed descent. The official language is English, but most Montserratians also speak a Creole language similar to that spoken in Jamaica.
