Alexander Miles (May 18, 1838 – May 7, 1918) was an African American inventor and businessman, known for being awarded a patent for automatically opening and closing elevator doors. He was awarded U.S. patent 371,207 on October 11, 1887.

What a wonderful invention by Alexander. The automatically opening and closing of elevator doors is taken for granted by many to be always so. To be awarded the patent for such an innovative invention is ingenious.

Yet another invention that is used by millions of people per day, which was developed by a black person. I believe that most people do not think about the invention of such a us technology, moreover that it is credited to a black man.
