Garrett Augustus Morgan Sr (March 4, 1877 – July 27, 1963) was an American inventor, businessman, and community leader.
His most notable inventions were a type of three-way traffic light in 1923,[1] and a protective ‘smoke hood'[2] notably used in a 1916 tunnel construction disaster rescue. In 1923, Morgan designed a traffic signal after witnessing a horrible crash at an intersection. His manually operated design included moving arms featuring signals for “go” and “stop”.[1] He eventually sold the rights to General Electric.
Morgan also discovered and developed a chemical hair-processing and straightening solution. He created a successful company called “G. A. Morgan Hair Refining Company” based on his hair product inventions and a complete line of hair care products.
Conclusion
His is often so hidden, often to the convenience of those who want it to be so.
Editor’s Note
When you consider how much we rely on traffic lights yet so little is known or taught the inventor Garrett Morgan, a black man.
